With a flick of her brush, Isobel creates dazzling portraits for a dangerous set of clients: the fair folk. These immortal creatures cannot bake bread or put pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human arts with a terrible thirst and trade valuable enchantments for Isobel's paintings. But when she gets her first royal patron - Rook, the Prince of Autumn - Isobel makes a deadly mistake. She paints a deadly sadness in his eyes, a weakness that could cost him his throne and even his life.

Furious, Rook takes Isobel to his kingdom to be judged for her crime. But something is very wrong in their world and they are attacked from all sides. With Isobel and Rook depending on each other for survival, their alliance turns to trust, perhaps even love... a forbidden emotion that would violate the relentless laws of the righteous, causing both lives to be lost. What force could Isobel's paintings conjure that is powerful enough to challenge the ancient malice of the faerie courts?
