Fourth Wing

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail should have entered the Scribes' Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general - aka her badass mother - has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates fighting to become Navarre's elite: the dragon riders.

But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is fragile, death is just a heartbeat away... because dragons don't bond with "fragile" humans. They incinerate us. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to increase their chances of success.

The others would kill her just for being her mother's daughter - like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wing leader in the Knights Quadrant. She will need every advantage her intelligence can give her just to see the next sunrise.

However, with each passing day, the war outside becomes deadlier, the kingdom's protections are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Worse still, Violet begins to suspect that the leadership is hiding a terrible secret. Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has one goal - because once you get in, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at the Basgiath War School - Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test, meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet is already wondering how she's going to get through it. It's not just that it is grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it was designed to increase the riders' capacity for pain beyond their endurance. It's the new vice-commander, who has made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is - unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet's body may be weaker and more fragile than everyone else's, she still has her intelligence - and an iron will. And the leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath taught it: Dragon riders make their own rules.
